Lecture-Recital: An Evening of Shanghai Shidaiqu

From the 1920s to the 1970s, a kind of music called Shidaiqu(songs of the era) emerged, travelling from the dance halls ofShanghai to the nightclubs of Hong Kong. This eventcombines live narration with musical performance, guidingaudiences through three defining chapters of Shidaiqu’shistory: the genre’s emergence in cosmopolitan Shanghaiduring the 1930s, its golden age amid the dazzling stars of the1940s, and its enduring legacy after relocating to Hong Kongin the 1950s. Timeless songs will be reinterpreted by Alfa andChak, with commentary by Lao Sam In (Lao Bak), a musiceducator and advocate for Macau’s arts and cultural scene.
