Medium- to long-term projects include the South Line, West Line, Taipa North Line, and Taipa Central Line. Of the six new lines, all except the Seac Pai Van Extension are planned as underground routes, while the Seac Pai Van Extension will adopt an elevated design.

The Macao Light Rapid Transit Taipa Line has already been extended to Barra, the Seac Pai Van Line, and the Hengqin Line. The East Line is expected to be completed in 2029, at which time the entire light rail network will cover about 24 kilometers and 21 stations, connecting key areas such as the Barrier Gate border checkpoint, Zone A of the New Urban Area, and Taipa Ferry Terminal, thereby improving travel convenience for residents. Wong Kin Wai, a representative of the consultancy for the light rail project, pointed out that coverage of the light rail network in some areas is still not ideal, and that this study therefore focuses on how to enhance the efficiency of the light rail system and expand the scope of network coverage.

The six lines are divided into near-, medium-, and long-term phases.

Introductory document on the light rail route blueprint

According to the introductory document, the Study on the Development Strategy of the Light Rapid Transit has three objectives. First, to facilitate travel and promote industry. By strengthening connections between the light rail and border checkpoints, the airport, ferry terminals, and residential areas, it aims to improve the efficiency of both cross-border and local transfers, promote the flow of people and coordinated regional economic development, and support industrial growth. Second, to enhance efficiency and improve quality. Future route planning studies will introduce new systems to improve the operational efficiency, stability, and safety of the light rail. Third, to promote a sustainable transport strategy. By expanding the light rail network, it aims to increase the proportion of green travel, while underground construction will improve the resilience of the transport system, enhance residents’ quality of life, and reduce the impact on the urban landscape.

The six light rail lines are divided into near-term, medium-term, and long-term projects according to their implementation schedule. The near-term projects include the East Line Extension and the Seac Pai Van Extension. The medium-term projects include the South Line and the first section of the West Line, namely the Qingmao to Fai Chi Kei section. The long-term projects cover the remaining section of the West Line, namely the Fai Chi Kei to Barra section, as well as the Taipa North Line and the Taipa Central Line.

The East Line Extension will connect Barrier Gate and Qingmao.

Illustration of the East Line Extension (document screenshot)

According to the introductory document, the East Line Extension will have a total length of 1.5 kilometers and will extend westward from Barrier Gate to Qingmao Port. Qingmao Station will connect with the future West Line to form an outer loop, and passengers will also be able to transfer to the Sports Park Station. The main stations include Qingmao Station and Sports Park Station, mainly serving travelers crossing the border at Qingmao Port, users of the sports park facilities, and nearby residents commuting to and from the area. It is proposed that the entire line be built underground using the tunnel boring method. As an extension of the East Line, it is recommended to continue using the existing East Line system.

The Seac Pai Van Extension involves relatively low construction difficulty.

The Seac Pai Van Extension will connect Seac Pai Van to Coloane Village.

Another near-term project is the Seac Pai Van Extension, with a total length of about 2.1 kilometers. Its main stations include Panda Pavilion Station, Lai Chi Vun Station, and Coloane Village Station. The line will extend from Seac Pai Van to Coloane Village, with stations located near residential areas and major attractions, providing convenient service for both residents’ daily commuting and visitors’ sightseeing. It is proposed that the entire line be built as an elevated route. Taking passenger flow and landscape requirements into account, the section from Lai Chi Vun Station to Coloane Village Station will be constructed as a single-track, bi-directional shuttle segment. The viaduct will be laid along the hillside on one side of Rua do Campo, with slope reinforcement and improvement to be carried out at the same time. As this line faces fewer geographical constraints and is less difficult to implement, it is recommended for inclusion as a near-term project. As an extension of the Seac Pai Van Line, it is recommended to continue using the existing Seac Pai Van Line system.

Wong Kin Wai said that the light rail route blueprint takes into account a range of factors, including preliminary technical feasibility, preliminary passenger flow estimates and benefits, spatial and land constraints, the needs of Macau residents, and future planning, with the aim of achieving the best possible balance so as to improve passenger convenience and expand service coverage.

Source: Macao Daily News The government yesterday released an introductory document for the “Study on the Development Strategy of the Macao Light Rapid Transit,” and from today until February 28 it is publicly collecting opinions.
