Co-building the Next Chapter of District Renewal
To effectively integrate government and community resources and enhance local district development, the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region has established the District Development Center. Officially launched in December 2025, this center aims to revitalize historical areas through a collaborative model that emphasizes “government oversees, IR enterprises invests, and civil society organizes.”
By fostering inter-departmental collaboration, the government will coordinate development projects across various districts, while IR enterprises will contribute essential funding. The community will take the lead in planning and executing initiatives, ensuring that local insights and needs are prioritized.
Bringing Together Diverse Views and Local Warmth
The District Development Center will serve as a pivotal platform for uniting these efforts, allowing for collective action that honors the cultural and historical context of each district.
The center has established an advisory group and a steering committee composed of representatives from the government, community organizations, IR enterprises, the business sector, tourism, cultural and communication sector, urban planning, and academia. Together, these groups will provide insights and recommendations for district development, ensuring that the center’s efforts align with the goals of the SAR government and maintain a high standard of professionalism and broad social acceptance.
Weaving Culture into District
Through strategic partnerships, the center seeks to create vibrant commercial zones, strengthen inter-district connections, and enhance the overall economic vitality and image of Macao’s historical districts.
The Center also serves as a coordinating and facilitation platform for district development, connecting the Government, the industry and various sectors of society to promote linkage and complementarity among districts. It advances district development initiatives that are consensus-based, sustainable and community-oriented, with a view to progressively enhancing the overall image of the districts and the effectiveness of development efforts.
